The first DORAN ancestor I can find in all the extant records is Michael Doran. Michael and Margery Doran and their five children were all born in Ireland, but the exact location is unknown. Sadly, the records only state "Ireland" as their birthplace with no given County or town. It seems, however, that they made their way to England in the late 1830s, just prior to the Great Irish Famine.

(1) 1 Michael DORAN
Birth Date ABT 1786
Birth Place Ireland
Death Date 5 MAR 1865, age: 79
Death Place Wigan, Lancashire, England
Death Memo Doran, Michael: Wigan Register: 8c 26. There is also Doran, Michael: Wigan Register: 8c 41.
Burial Place Wigan Cemetery (Lower Ince), Lancashire, England
Burial Memo Doran, Michael, 79 yrs, Wigan Union Workhouse: 05-Mar-1865
Occ Cotton Weaver
Alias Dorond on 1851 UK Census

The Doran Family appears on the 1841 Census of Wigan (Scholes), England. Scholes was a district of Wigan filled with the Irish Diaspora in the 1840s.

According to this census the Dorans arrived in England sometime after 1836.

Name: Michael Doran
Age: 55
Sex: Male
Occupation: Cotton Weaver
Born: Ireland
Margery Doran, 45, Ireland
Michael Doran, 15, Cotton Weaver, Ireland
John Doran, 15, Cotton Weaver, Ireland
James Doran, 13, Cotton Weaver, Ireland
Alice, 15, Cotton Weaver, Ireland
Margaret, 5, Ireland

I originally thought that Michael, John and Alice may have been triplets based on the fact that the 1841 Census entry recorded them all as "15 years of age". However, The instructions to the enumerator as to how to record ages are at the beginning of every enumerator's book and read:

"Write the age of every person under 15 years of age as it is stated to you. For persons aged 15 years and upwards, write the lowest term of 5 years within which the age is. Thus - for Persons aged 15 years and under 20 write 15 , 20 years and under 25 write 20. So these three 15 year olds would have been between 15 and 19 years old."

The 1851 UK Census for England has the following information. Notice the name was spelled DOROND not Doran. From the Irish mouth of the informant to the English ear of the Enumerator, something got lost in translation!

Notice John and Alice Doran are on their own during this Census. Alice is living as a lodger at 2 Chapel Street in Wigan and John Doran is also living as a lodger at 179 Nicholas' Nook, Scholes, Wigan. I wonder who is Michael Dorond, visitor, age 5. He may be the son of Margaret, age 18.

There is a Michael Doran who died in the Wigan Workhouse on 5 March 1865 at the age of 79. I do not know if this is our Michael Doran: Wigan Register: 8c 41

1841 UK Census: Michael Doran is listed with his parents and other members of his family. Michael, John and Alice are listed as the same age but, on this Census ages were rounded down five years! So, they are not likely to have been triplets.

1851 UK Census: Michael Doran, age 26 is listed with his wife, Mary, age 24 and son, David, age 8 months. They lived at 168 Nicholas's Nook in location 94, Scholes, an area of Wigan teamimg with the Irish Diaspora.
This is the only instance of a Michael and Mary Doran living in Wigan. It is also interesting to note that there is a Bridget Doran, age 28, born in Ireland.. living in the next household as a lodger. This Bridget may be the sister of Michael Doran.

1861 UK Census: Michael Doran, 35, born Ireland, Factory Operative, is listed with his wife Mary, 30, born Ireland, Factory Operative, son David, 10, born Wigan, Factory Operative, daughter Margaret, 8, born Wigan, daughter Alice, 6, born Wigan, daughter Catherine, 2, born WIgan. Notice that Micahel Doran is missing. This Michael died on 25 May 1858, 32 hours after he was born. Michael's birth was not certified (registered) according to his death certificate. He was pre-mature, age recorded as 32 hours, son of Michael Doran, a stand loam Cotton Weaver. The informant of his death was his mother, Mary Doran who signed with her "X" that she was present as hihs death at 5 Rothwell's Yard, Belvoir Street, Wigan. The death was registered the same day, 25 May 1858 by Robert Halliwell, Registrar.

The family lived at 22 John Street, the Municipal Ward of Scholes, Wigan, in the Eccesiastical District of Saint Catherines.

1871 UK Census: the following people lived in the Doran household at 4 Waddingtons Buildings, Municipal Ward of Queen Street, Wigan, in the Ecclesiastical District of Saint Thomas:

According to the 1881 Census of England, Michael Doran lived at 12 Farrimonds Row in Wigan, Lancashire, England He was 56 years old at the time. His occupation was labourer. He was born in Ireland. The source of information is: FHL Film 1341901 PRO Ref RG11 Piece 3766 Folio 130 Page 30.

His daughter Margaret was the widow of Michael Gorman who died in 1878. Margaret and her two year old son, Stephen, who was born in 1878, the same year his father died, lived with the Doran family during the census of 1881.

Michael Doran died at 11 Farrimond's Row, Wigan on 1 June 1891. He was buried in the Wigan Cemetery, Lower Ince, Lancashire, England. His headstone says he was 72 years old. That would indicate he was born ± 1819.
Spouse Mary GORE
Birth Date 1826
Birth Place Wigan, Lancashire, England
Birth Memo 1861UK Census says born 1831 in Ireland.
Death Date 12 JUL 1897, age: 71
Death Place Mill Street, WIgan, Lancashire, England
Burial Place Wigan Cemetery (Lower Ince), Lancashire, England
Occ 1851: Drawer in a Factory
Father William GORE (1801-)
Mother Alice (1801-)

There are 4 possibilities for Mary Gore in 1841:

1. born Lancashire - in Hindley, possibly father William
2. born Lancashire - in Pemberton, parents possibly Richard & Jane
3. (no record of where born) - in Wigan, parents poss William & Alice (both b Lancs)
4. b Lancs. - in Wigan, parents poss Joseph (a publican) & Sarah

I believe the correct Mary Gore is #3 because her parents names, William and Alice, are carried down through the generations.

The 1841 census doesn't give relationships and ages of adults (over 15) were usually rounded down to the nearest 5, so ages aren't accurate.

There is only one John Doyle in Wigan and the surrounding areas of Wigan at the time of the 1881 Census of England. At that time he lived as a lodger at the home of Mary Doyle, a dressmaker. The home was located at 26 Miry Lane, Wigan, Lancashire, England.

It is interesting to note that the "Head" of the household is the widow, Mary Doyle, born 1831 in Ireland. She had two Doyle lodgers who are mentioned in the 1881 Census of England: James Doyle, a coal miner (age 24), born 1857 in Warrington, Lancashire, England and John Doyle, a coal miner (age 21), born 1860 in Warrington, Lancashire, England. A third lodger is mentioned, John Sweeney, a coal miner (age 19), born 1862 in Liverpool, Lancashire, England.

James and John Doyle may have been the sons of the widow, Mary Doyle. Thomas Doyle (alias John Doyle?) was the second husband of Margaret Doran-Gorman, whose husband, Michael Gorman died in 1878.

At the time of his marriage on 21 January 1882 to Margaret Doran-Gorman, Thomas Doyle was 36 and a widower. He lived at 31 Clayton Street, Wigan. He was an Overlooker in a Cotton factory.

My Internet friend, Ann Welding, sent this email to me 26 Jan 2007:

Bill,
I found the record of the death of Michael Gorman in Wigan Q1 1878 in the BMD records. The record says he was born circa 1853: www.freeukbmd.org.uk

I have searched the 1871 census & found 9 individuals in England, with the name Michael Gorman born between 1848 & 1858 (ie. 1853 +/-5 years)

1. Michael Gorman abt 1858 Birkenhead, Cheshire, England Boarder Birkenhead Cheshire
2. Michael Gorman Catharine abt 1858 St Werburgh, Derbyshire, England Son All Saints Derbyshire
3. Michael Gorman James abt 1848 Tuam, Ireland Head Glossop Derbyshire
4. Michael Gorman abt 1851 Derbyshire, England Boarder St Michael Derbyshire
5. Michael Gorman John, Mary abt 1858 Towlaw, Durham, England Son Cornforth Durham
6. Michael Gorman Maurace, Ann abt 1856 Chesterfield Son All Souls Lancashire
7. Michael Gorman James O, Jane abt 1857 Bolton, Lancashire, England Son Little Bolton Lancashire
8. Michael Gorman abt 1857 Durham, England Granddaughter (should be grandson) Salford Lancashire
9. Michael Gorman abt 1849 Waterford, Ireland Boarder Salford Lancashire

If he is amongst these, my money would be on one of the Irish boys. I've not checked them all, but the one in All Saints, Derbyshire, could be a possibility, his mother was born in Ireland. Also the one b 1851 in Derbyshire, his mother was also born in Ireland.

It could be that he isn't one of these, he might not be in England in 1871, or his name could have been mis-spelled or mistranscribed. I'm afraid you will need a marriage cert to find his father's name, as he was married to Margaret Doran in the Registry Office.

Sorry I can't be of more help

Anne

On the 1930 US Census, Stephen Gorman, the son of Michael Gorman, says that his father was born in the Irish Free State"!

The marriage certificate of MARGARET DORAN and MICHAEL GORMAN reads:

"Married (7 November 1875) in the St. Joseph's Church, according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Catholic Church by Certificate by Henry J. Lamon. Witnesses George Daly and Alice Doran. James Jolley, Registrar"

St. Joseph's Catholic Church is on Caroline Street which lies between Wallgate and Chapel Lane, which is the continuation of Poolstock. Its equivalent Church of England was St. Thomas, which is now merged with St. James, Poolstock. St. Thomas was demolished, but St. Joseph's still stands with a prominent statue of the saint on its north wall. It's future fate is unknown.

Michael Gorman died on 3 March 1878 of typhoid fever at the Union Workhouse in WIgan. He was only 25 and a coal miner. Typhoid fever is an illness caused by the bacterium Salmonella Typhi. Common worldwide, it is transmitted by ingestion of food or water contaminated with feces from an infected person. The bacteria then multiply in the blood stream of the infected person and are absorbed into the digestive tract and eliminated with the waste.

Michael Gorman gave his residence as 22 Victoria Street, Wigan. At that time Victoria Street was located in Wigan at Location #117 in the area known as Wallgate. Wallgate is/was one of the major roads going through Wigan town centre - it would appear that Victoria Steet meets or rather met Wallgate next to where the building or house numbered 117 was situated.

Stephen Joseph Gorman, his father, Stephen Gorman, and his paternal grandfather, Michael Gorman were all born in Wigan, Lancashire, England. Wigan was created on July 1, 1837. It was a sub-district of Lancashire. All records are kept at the New Town Hall, Library Street , Wigan, Lancashire WN1 1NN

In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Wigan like this:

"Wigan, parl. and mun. bor., manufacturing town, par., and township, SW. Lancashire, on river Douglas, 21? miles NE. of Liverpool - par., 29,033 ac., pop. 117,725; bor. and township, 2188 ac., pop. 48,194; 3 Banks, 2 newspapers. Market-days, Monday and Friday. Wigan is an ancient place, but has become of consequence only since the rise of the cotton mfr. Its position in the midst of a great and rich coalfield, and its easy means of transit by railway and canal, have given it peculiar facilities for mfrs., which consist chiefly of calicoes, checks, fustians, and other cotton fabrics. It has also linen works, iron foundries, iron forges, iron rolling mills, railway waggon works, chemical works, breweries, and a papermill. Some of its cotton mills and iron works are among the largest in the kingdom. The original parish church of All Saints dates from the 14th century. A public park of 30 acres was opened in 1878. Wigan was a borough by prescription, first chartered by Henry III. It returns 1 member to Parliament; it returned 2 members from the time of Edward VI. until 1885."

Wigan in 1845 was at a pivotal point in its history. The once pleasant market town and spa, one of Lancashire's four ancient boroughs, has been surrounded by coal pits and textile mills and, more importantly, has been recently connected with the early railway system. The old shape of the medieval town, with its long burgess plots behind the houses of Standishgate, is still discernable, and the countryside is only a few hundred yards away from most townsfolk.

The cotton trade was aided initially by the digging of the strategic Leeds to Liverpool canal which can be seen passing closely to the south of the town. Several large chemical works have also been sited along the canal emphasising the diverse trades settling in the town. Coal mining was one of the key industries of the day with pits being sunk close to the town at Scholes and Hardybutts. Extensive tramways slice through the ancient fields linking collieries to the railway and to the canal.

Over the next fifty years Wigan will become another grimy Northern industrial town surrounded, not by fields, but by rows of terraced houses but in 1845 much of the old market and spa town was still to be seen.

Stephen Gorman was a barman at the Golden Lion Pub in Wigan. The Golden Lion was located at 2 Market Street, in Wallgate, Wigan. Stephen, Harold, and William Gorman, the children of Stephen Gorman and Annie Pomfret, were born in the flat above this bar.

Wallgate is one of the main streets in Wigan. It runs West to East into the town centre, it starts at the River Douglas were it would split into Ormskirk Road and Robin Park Road going West. It continues under a bridge which is known as 'Wallgate Bridge' then up to the 'top of Wigan' where it turns into Market Place where the Town Hall used to be hundreds of years ago.

The Golden Lion no longer exists. The exact location of the Golden Lion at that time would have been:

Today, 2 Market Street is a bank. There is a lot of redevelopment going on.

I received this email from Alice Pearson concerning the GoldenLion:

Re: The Golden Lion. This symbol is from the White Lion Hotel, 1824-1958. Although called Hotel it was a pub. The pub was located at 2 Market St. Wigan. It was bought by Mr. Lowe in 1957 and razed in 1958 to extend his store. The White Lion symbol was imbedded in the back wall of the new building. Later, when the building was changed, the symbol was moved to the front of the building on the site where the old pub stood. It is there now in one of the peaks facing Standishgate. My father lived in the pub from about 1910 to 1923 when his parents ran it.

Kelly's Directory for Lancashire 1905 states that the publican (owner) was John Southern. Although this directory is dated 1905, the data would have been collected the year before, i.e. Sept/Oct 1904. It was located on Miry Lane off the bottom end of Wallgate, north of the railway, near the pier.

Immediately prior to WWI, the Golden Lion Hotel in Wallgate was tenanted by J Wilcock Unsworth. It was owned by the Oldfield Brewery and they also owned the Ashton Golden Lion.

Here is an interesting story about the Golden Lion Pub in 1839:

John Melling
William Cox was the landlord of the Golden Lion pub in Wallgate, Wigan in 1839. At 11 o'clock at night on the 3rd April, he was working in his cellar when John Melling came in, grabbed a bottle of brandy, and ran off. Cox gave chase up Bay Horse Yard, and was joined by two or three policemen. Melling dropped the brandy and was cornered and apprehended.
Date Tried: 29th April 1839, Wigan Quarter Sessions
Sentence: To be transported for seven years

Just for the record: today there is no Golden Lion in Wigan itself but there are two "Golden Lion" Pubs in the areas around WIgan.

There is a pub called The Golden Lion in Hindley Green, a district of Wigan. This Pub has accomodations above it.

Stephen Gorman attempted to board the ship Cymric from Liverpool on 29 September 1905 . He was suppose to arrive at Boston on 8 October 1905 and proceed to Rhode Island. He was 27. His stated his occupation was a barman in Wigan, Lancashire. He had 7 Pounds Sterling in his possession. He did not have a ticket to his final destination: Providence. He said his passgae from Liverpool was paid for by his sister. But he did not have a sister. He was to meet his friend, Daniel Bulpit of 50 Regent Avenue, Mount Pleasant, Providence, Rhode Island.

He never boarded that ship, probably because he didn't have the money in hand. He was still waiting for the money. So he waited for the next ship:

Stephen Gorman immigrated to the United States on the S.S. Baltic from Liverpool on 4 October 1905 and arrived in New York on 12 October 1905. He was 27, Male, Married, a Barman, English Nationality, English Race. His last residence was WIgan, Lancashire, England and his final destination was Boston, Massachusetts. He had a ticket to his final destination. He paid for it himself. He had £6. This was his first time in the US. He was to meet his friend, Daniel Bullpit of Regent Avenue, Mount Pleasant, Providence, Rhode Island.

Stephen Gorman worked for the Brown and Sharpe Company all his adult life. At the start of the First World War in 1914 he returned to Wigan to work in ammunitions factory owned by the Brown and Sharpe Company. In 1918, after the War, he returned to Rhode Island.

I received the following e-mail concerning the Brown & Sharpe Company:

Hi, Bill. Saw your posting at LANCSGEN re: Brown & Sharpe. We do, indeed still have an office here in Rhode Island, North Kingstown, to be exact. It was a munitions manufacturer during WWII (my father was employed there after WWII and was therefore exempt from draft during the Korean War, as they manufactured arms for the wars). Up until the 60's (don't quote me but if my memory serves me right this is when they moved their facility) they were located in Providence, Rhode Island. Brown & Sharpe were (and still are) tool-makers. They have a website at http://www.brownandsharpe.com/main/

I tried to locate a bit of history at the site, but found very little, although I do find locations in England - 1 at Telford, Shropshire; 1 at Swindon, Wiltshire (a very quaint and lovely little town, by the way, with lots of traditional English pubs); and 1 at Glasgow, Scotland. You may want to try e-mailing them via the website - they can most likely steer you in the direction of a bit more extensive history and let you know if there was a facility at Wigan.

Cheers and Good Luck to you.

Stephen and his wife Anna O'Brien lived for many years at 147 Regent Avenue in Providence. They later moved to 54 Bergen Street also in the Mount Pleasant section of Providence, Rhode Island.

Stephen worked with his father, Stephen and his brother, Harold at the Brown and Sharpe Company in Providence, Rhode Island.

He was very involved with Democratic party politics in the 5th Ward of Providence.

He suffered all his life with asthma and had a "game" leg, which was caused when he stepped on a rusty nail while playing a prank of unhooking the electric wire from a trolley car. He was also allergic to wheat products. But he managed to have a "short" glass of Burgundy wine once in a while. He bribed his grandsons with "two bits" (25 cents) if they promised not to tell their grandmother.

Stephen J. Gorman was known affectionately by his grandchildren as "Poppy".

Stephen J. Gorman's obituary appeared in the Providence Journal on 27 November 1962:

Johanna Joseph Brien was usually called Anna O'Brien. The second name "Joseph" for a girl was common in those days. Blanche McCarthy in an e-mail on October 9, 2000 wrote to me:

"Joseph was a very popular 2nd name for girls. Almost as popular as Mary was for a 1st name!! That priest had a one-track mind. Kids didn't get the names the parents wanted!! They got the names the priest decided to give them!!"

During WWII she worked at the Revere Rubber Company and after the war at the Peerless Box Company. Her niece, Mary Gorman, got her and her daughter, Mary Gorman-Dorgan, a job at the Peerless Box Co in 1947-1948.

Anna was an active member of many church and civic organizations. She belonged to the Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States, Waters-Langton Post #228 in Providence, Rhode Island. She was also the Chaplain and "Sunshine Chairman" of the Thomas L. Ryan Post #47, Auxiliary in Providence, Rhode Island

By her grandchildren she was affectionately known as Nana.
